VW Beginnings

On January 17, 1949, the Volkswagen Beetle debuted in the USA. The brand and the vehicle quickly entered American pop culture. The VW Beetle appeared in numerous television shows and movies, with a starring role in The Love Bug. This film created the Herbie franchise, which saw releases from 1969 up to 2005. However, the Beetle wasn’t the only VW that became a mainstay in popular culture. The variations of the VW Bus became a beloved symbol of adventure throughout the 1960s through the 1970s for surfers and those with free spirits. The Golf GTI and Jetta also fulfilled a market search for compact cars with personality during the 1970s.
